Griffin police told the AJC the motive in Saturday’s killing of Jerode Paige — the rapper known as Yung Hott — was territorial.
Paige, 27, hailed from the west side of town. He and other west-siders were filming a music video on the east side.
“East side versus west side — been that way since the ’90s,” Police Chief Frank Strickland said Wednesday.
Lt. Sam Parks added, “Gang members wearing their colors who were from the east side of the city took offense. … Gang members can be very territorial.”
It was 6 p.m. Saturday when four men came up on foot to East Tinsley and Fourth streets, and three of them began firing, police said. Paige was killed at point-blank range. Four others, including a 5-year-old girl, suffered non-life-threatening injuries. More than 20 rounds were fired, police said.
Police quickly arrested four Griffin men.
Bahir Howard, 22, Corderra Walker, 21, Terrance Jones, 23, and Terry James Fuller, 31, are being held without bond on charges of murder, aggravated assault, child cruelty and commission of a crime with a firearm.
Paige was paroled last year after serving prison time for a variety of drug offenses and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
The video was to accompany Paige’s first single.
