Electric Lady studios, nestled in the heart of New York’s popular West Village neighborhood, once served as the creative space for guitar god Jimi Hendrix. Though the space is use to being surrounded by an eclectic mix of NYU college campus kids and everyday hustlers, today the legendary studio has a mixture of both buzzing through its hallways as journalists and bloggers galore gather to get a taste of T.I.’s eight studio album, Trouble Man: Heavy is the Head.
After a bit of the open bar and free food was enjoyed by the pen-pimps in attendance and special guests like Tyson Beckford, Angela Yee & DJ Woo Kid got comfortable, T.I. was announced.
After sauntering through the crowd and making his way up to the laptop through the sounds of applause, the King of the South greeted his guests and prepped them on what they were about to hear. Tip explained that while the sonic objective was to mesh his earlier classic like Trap Muzik with the up to date sounds of albums like Paper Trail, the point of the title was pretty self explanatory.
“With the title I really wanted to let people know that I’m not oblivious to the fact that trouble has been ever-present in my life, ever since I can remember,” Tip said. “But what I am gone do is, I can tell you I’m not ‘finna shy away from it, apologize for it, or be ashamed of it, because all of these things that I’ve gone through have contributed to me being the man that I am today. I may have legal issues… some people have moral issues. I don’t point the finger at you, don’t point the finger at me.”
Once he got that off his chest, T.I. proceeded to give the people a taste of his latest creation. From the turned up “G Season” featuring MMG’s Meek Mill, to the R. Kelly assisted tune for the ladies called “Learn” Trouble Man seems to cover all angles. But perhaps, along with skits of actual situations that led to the court cases that made the title appropriate, the strongest moment came when “Hello” featuring soul man and fellow ATLien Cee-Lo Green was requested after previously being skipped over. The song was leaked a few days ago but listeners wanted the experience of hearing it in Tip’s presence. That record along with the rest solidified that Trouble Man is only going to be trouble for the competition.
