30 Deep gang member Jonathan Redding has been sentenced to life plus 70 years for three robberies and a murder that ignited a firestorm of public anger over violent crime in Atlanta, the AJC reports.

Redding was convicted of the murder of popular Grant Park bartender John Henderson, whose father urged Superior Court Judge Kimberly Esmond Adams to make an example out of Redding and the 30 Deep gang.

On the other side, Jonathan Redding’s mother, Dorothy Redding, cried and pleaded with the judge to show leniency, contending her son had been lured into the gang life.

It only took the Fulton County jury about two hours to convict Redding. Under a life sentence, Redding is not eligible for parole for 30 years.

Redding has refused to cooperate with police.

Don Henderson praised authorities for attacking the gang problem in Atlanta. He said his family would do its part by lobbying state authorities to ensure Redding never gets paroled.
