The Cinderella story is real, especially in the music industry. T-Pain is one of those with a rags-to-riches story. He shared his story of trial and triumph on an episode of VH1′s Behind The Music.

Born Faheem Rasheed Najm, T-Pain grew up in Tallahassee, Florida in a middle class two parent household. Though talented, Pain was picked on at school for being a fat oddball. T-Pain left school at the end of middle school to concentrate on music and his group Nappy Headz.

By the mid 2000s, T-Pain ran away from home and signed a deal with Akon’s label. His work with Akon made him a producer and artist everyone wanted to work with. He then spoke about the backlash he received once the music industry became over-saturated with the auto-tune sound.

T-Pain also talked about learning of his father’s drug addiction and the unconventional way he and his wife maintain a healthy relationship. Check out the full episode below.
