When Missy Elliott and Timbaland take you under their wing, several things happen. You are immediately immersed into a pool of wisdom and a team of talented artists. The affiliation alone generates a significant buzz. We’ve seen it with acts such as Aaliyah, Ginuwine, Magoo and 702. Then, of course, there is the incredible music that is produced by the camp…

Tweet was once apart of the group Sugah, on Devante Swing’s Swing Mob collective. She met Missy and Timbaland there and in 1999, Missy called on her to lend her voice to her album Miss E… So Addictive.

Her soulful vocals and mastery of instruments resonated with audiences and after playing the background on everyone’s album from Petey Pablo to Ja Rule, she was given a chance as a solo artist. She found stardom there.

Her debut album “Southern Hummingbird” charted at number three on the Billboard 200. It sold 195,000 copies in the first week. It has sold 858,000 units in the U.S. to date.

“Oops Oh My” carried the album straight into the hearts of independent women and her personal account of heart ache on “Smoking Cigarettes At Night” made the disc unforgettable.

It has been 10 years since the release of the critically acclaimed “Southern Hummingbird” and Tweet reflects on how the industry and music has changed since then:

It’s been 10 years since Southern Hummingbird was released, What was different with your mentality from then to now, music wise?

“Musically, I think it’s the same. I can’t even say there’s a difference because I’m still writing and singing about things that I’m going though personally.  I don’t think its a different mentality. I couldn’t really tell you a difference. Whatever I’m going through I write about. 10 years, 20 years, 30 years, y’all gonna know what I’m going through.”

What is different in the industry?

“Well 10 years ago I think music was more appreciated. Right now everything sounds the same to me, personally as a consumer. 10 years ago you had the difference, rock was rock, pop was pop, R&B was R&B, Hip Hop was Hip Hop, but now everything is so meshed together that you can’t tell the difference. And I think that’s the biggest difference to me. Everything sounds like a one track, like you put on one record and everybody is just like come on let’s sing and rap on it and that’s what it is. That’s the difference to me.”

How do you feel about “Southern Hummingbird” being considered a classic?

“I’m taken back because when I made that album I didn’t know what it was gonna do. For me it was very, therapeutic, it was again pages out of my diary. I didn’t want to be a solo artist. Just me. I didn’t have any expectations from it. I was just doing music and releasing stuff that was bottled up. So to have people say a classic, I’m speechless.”

Tweet recently signed with DuBose Entertainment and her forthcoming album Simply Tweet will be their first release!
