The controversy over Lil Wayne’s lyrics on the remix to Future’s “Karate Chop” seems far from over.

Emmett Till’s family expressed outrage Weezy’s explicit line, “beat that p*ssy up like Emmett Till, leading Epic Records to announce that is doing everything in its power to get the song taken down. Epic also said the song in question is not the official “Karate Chop” remix.

Now Till’s family has penned an open letter to Lil Wayne addressed to his real name, Dwayne Michael Carter, that explains why they feel so disrespected by the rapper’s insensitive rhyme. The letter is attributed to the Mamie Till Mobley Memorial Foundation.

Till was a 14-year-old African-American from Chicago who was tortured and murdered in Mississippi in 1955 for allegedly flirting with a white woman. Till’s death galvanized the Civil Rights Movement after Till’s mother decided to showcase Till’s horrifying fatal wounds by holding an open casket funeral so the world could see the reality of racism and the brutality of her son’s murder.

The letter from the Till family also quotes music legend Stevie Wonder, who in a separate interview said he was friends with Lil Wayne but was disappointed to hear about the Emmett Till lyric.

“Sometimes people have to put themselves in the place of people who they are talking about,” Wonder said. “Imagine if that happened to your mother, brother, daughter or your son. How would you feel?”

The letter goes on to urge Lil Wayne to think about the power of his words and suggests he join the Mamie Till Mobley Memorial Foundation to help “educate and restore” Emmett Till’s name.
