Actor Leonard Nimoy, who played the iconic character Spock on the hit TV and movie franchise Star Trek, died Friday morning at his home in Los Angeles. He was 83. The cause of death was end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
In addition to acting, Nimoy’s other artistic pursuits included poetry, photography and music. The Spock character’s Vulcan salute and phrase, “Live long and prosper,” would become part of pop culture.
Star Trek premiered on NBC on Sept. 8, 1966. Nimoy also appeared in a cameo role in the 2009 Star Trek film, as well as its 2013 follow-up, Star Trek Into Darkness.
