A Black 25-year-old was shot by Georgia police right outside of his job. Channel 2 News is reporting the victim’s name is Nicolas Thomas, but the police have yet to confirm his identity. It’s being reported that Thomas was in a Maserati when the police opened fire on him. We’re not saying this has anything to do with the shooting, but…doesn’t it?

According to the news station, Cobb County and Smyrna police went to Thomas’ job at Goodyear Tire around 1:30 p.m. to serve him with an arrest warrant for a probation violation. They claim that when Thomas spotted him, he ran towards his car in an attempt to flee. The officer’s claim that Thomas was driving towards them which is why they opened fire.

“When you go to serve a suspect who knows that he is wanted he is unpredictable and we have to react based on his actions, that’s what we did today,” Sgt. Ed Cason with the Smyrna Police Department told Channel 2 News.

An eyewitness is claiming that police opened fire on Thomas shortly after their arrival and he wasn’t driving towards him.

“They were standing behind the car, opening fire. He wasn’t driving towards them,” Brittany Eustache who was inside the Goodyear told Channel 2 News. “The car was not moving when they begin to shoot at him. The car had been stopped he hit curb he could go any further.” Brittany maintains that Thomas made no violent moves towards the officers who shot him and that the officers shot at Thomas from behind, indicating they were pursuing him, not the other way around as they claimed!

Nicolas Thomas’ father, Huey Thomas, told Channel 2 News at the scene, “I guess now, I just want to understand what happened, because I hear so often and here it is now.  I’m a professional, my wife is a professional and we have a kid that’s dead.” A Black man’s background doesn’t matter when he faces off with police.

The Root is reporting that police are still gathering information and have yet to confirm how many of the six officers who were on the scene actually opened fire. The police claim they were in fear of their lives. Thomas’ parents can’t believe they have lost a son over what they describe as a traffic warrant and want to know what happened. “He was a lovable guy,” mother Felicia Thomas told the news station. “He was just a lovable guy. He would do anything for everybody. He just loved cars. He loved his family. He just had a baby.  His baby is not even 5-months-old.”

Sad. Even though Thomas had a record, that doesn’t justify how violent the police behaved towards him. And with the multiple bullet holes that were in the car, you can tell these officers were shooting to kill. Our prayers go out to the Thomas family.
