After being found dead in her jail cell bed on Sunday, a 37-year-old Cleveland native identified as Ralkina Jones became the third Black woman to die in police custody in the past two weeks.

Jones, who was arrested after allegedly attacking her ex-husband at his place of work, was charged with felonious assault, criminal mischief, domestic violence, and creating a disturbance for the July 24 incident. She was also charged with endangering a child — the Huffington Post reports that Jones’ ex-husband, Brandon Jones, told police she “climbed into her car and drove it straight at him and the other man he was with.” Her 12-year-old daughter was in the car with her when she allegedly attacked the men.

Jones was taken to Cleveland Heights jail. She died two days later. Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner spokesperson Chris Harris told the Huffington Post there were no suspicious injuries on Jones’ body. An autopsy was performed Monday.

While taking Ralkina Jones into custody, officers learned that she “was being treated for several medical conditions,” Cleveland Heights Police Chief Jeffrey Robertson said in a statement Monday. While in custody, Jones received prescription medications “as directed,” Robertson said.

But at 7:15 p.m. on Saturday, Jones was taken by ambulance to a hospital because jail personnel noticed that she appeared “lethargic.” She was treated and returned to the jail at 10:40 p.m., the statement said.

Paramedics were summoned again just over two hours later, but found that Jones’ vital signs were normal. Guards checked on her throughout the night, Robertson said, but at an unspecified time she was “found unresponsive in the bed of the holding cell.”

The death comes two weeks after Sandra Bland, a #BlackLivesMatter activist who recently moved to Texas to start a new job, was found dead in her jail cell. Her death was labeled a suicide.
