Georgia Congressmen John Lewis and Hank Johnson along with The Congressional Black Caucus are in Atlanta TODAY, with more than 100 companies who are taking resumes, applications and ready to hire. They are at Atlanta Technical College. Registration starts at 8 am. Congressman John Lewis says this jobs event is one of five in major urban cities to help reduce the destructive high unemployment rates. Also concerned, Congressman Hank Johnson who believes targeted initiatives should be discussed to help minority communities. The general unemployment rate in Georgia is 10.1%, but African Americans suffer 16% unemployment. The problem is more staggering when it comes to black males, who suffer 35-45% joblessness.

Congressmen John Lewis and Hank Johnson along with The Congressional Black Caucus have launched a “For the People” Jobs Initiative to get 10,000 people hired.  Congressman Hank Johnson says the CBC gained corporation from hundreds of companies and employers who want to recruit new workers. They will be at various job fairs including Atlanta, on August 18, 2011.  Congressman John Lewis says, the national job tour is in response to the alarming high unemployment rates in Black America. According to labor statistics the general unemployment rate is around 9.2%. It’s about 16% for blacks and more specifically, 40% for young black men. However many activists claim the true unemployment number for the African-American community is much more staggering. They say when you consider the many people who can not claim unemployment benefits; then the Black unemployment number is more like 30% for blacks and 50% for young black men.

The Congressional Black Caucus has launched Major Job Fairs, Town Hall Meetings.

First to link the unemployed with companies looking to hire and secondly to get your opinion about critical jobs legislation for this country.

The Fulton County Division of Nursing is holding “Vaccination Rush Weeks” to administer required school vaccinations.  A back to school vaccination “kick-off” will take place, Saturday, July 30th, from 9 am until 3 pm at the North Fulton Service Center, located at 7741 Roswell Road in Sandy Springs, Georgia 30328.

Back-to-School Rush Weeks will be held August 1 – 5 and August 8 – 12 from 8:30am – 4:00 pm at the following vaccination zones:  

• North Fulton Health Center – 3155 Royal Drive, Atlanta 30022
• Center for Health and Rehabilitation – 365 Boulevard, Atlanta 30312
• Adamsville Health Center – 3699 Bakers Ferry, SW, Atlanta 30331
• College Park Health Center – 1920 John E. Wesley Ave., College Park 30337

Marta is proposing a new Operating and Capital Budget which includes raising fares from the base of $2.00 to $2.50. Weekly and monthly passes will go up as well. The economy is squeezing the transit agency between cutting routes and increasing the costs to ride Marta. You can see the latest proposal on Marta’s website, www.itsmarta.com. The Marta board of directors will vote on their final budget on June 6, 2011, but they’d like to get your opinions on fares, cutting or maintaining services, and hiring more Marta Police. Tell them what you think at public hearings scheduled on Monday and Tuesday at the locations listed below:
