Baton Rouge rapper Lil Boosie has been sentenced to eight years in prison following his guilty plea to drug charges.

The 29-year-old rapper (born Torrence Hatch) pleaded guilty Tuesday to conspiring to smuggle codeine, marijuana and ecstasy into the Louisiana State Penitentiary and Dixon Correctional Institute in Jackson, Louisiana.

Assistant District Attorney Dana Cummings told the Associated Press that Boosie was serving a prison term for a separate conviction for marijuana possession when he smuggled the drugs with help from a prison guard.

Boosie’s lawyer told TMZ the rapper is happy with the resolution — because Boosie is confident officials will allow him to participate in a drug rehab program so he can beat his addiction to codeine and other drugs.

As we previously reported, Boosie also faces a much more serious first-degree murder charge stemming from the 2009 death of Terry Boyd. The trial is scheduled to start April 30.

Boosie released the following statement to TMZ:

“Don’t worry about me I am getting help with my drug addiction and I am accepting full responsibility for the choice I made. I am going to fight the false murder charge till the end. Love you all.”
