Keith Cassim Elam, son of the late legendary hip hop artist Keith “Guru” Elam, hugs his grandfather Judge Harry J. Elam Sr. during a memorial service held at UMass/Boston Sunday, July 18, 2010. (Enesto Arroyo photo)

From the Bay State Banner:

It was early in the rap game, back when lyrics were raw and the MCs outlandish, and, for the first time in his life, Big Shug was reluctant to go onstage: “I was like, ‘I don’t know, man.’ ”

The reluctance was understandable. But his partner, Keith Elam, was persistent, begging and pleading with Shug to do this one set — and things would be alright. If successful, Elam exclaimed, they would be able to pursue their dreams of making it big in the music business.

And off they went to perform their act before two people — Elam’s equally reluctant parents.

Distinguished attorney Harry J. Elam Sr., the first African American to preside as a judge in the Boston Municipal Court of Massachusetts, and his wife, Barbara, a noted educator and former director of the library system for Boston’s public schools, was part of the dignified Roxbury, the one where success was more than a goal. It was expected, and in fact, demanded of the heirs of those who had achieved.

Rap, hip hop — whatever it was called at the time — was not part of that discussion. “I thought I was going to be guilty of something,” Big Shug recalled. “But we did it, right there in his parent’s living room. And Guru was so happy that he kept telling me how much that meant to him and how he appreciated what I had done.”

Guru was right about one thing. For Big Shug, who grew up in Mattapan and would later run afoul of the law, he never feared performing before another crowd. “I think that was one of the toughest things I have ever done,” Big Shug said.

That story was shared with several hundred people gathered at UMass Boston last Sunday to celebrate the life of Keith Elam, the legendary musician who went by the name of Guru. Last summer Guru was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a form of cancer.

In February he was taken to the hospital after suffering from related respiratory problems and soon afterwards slipped into a coma from which he never recovered. He died in April at the age of 47.

“He died too soon,” Judge Elam told the gathering. “But he had been in a coma for a while and he would not have been the same Keith.”

It was dignified crowd of lawyers and rappers, family and fans — most with a connection to Roxbury, from Ed O.G., arguably one of Boston’s most renowned rappers to Willie Davis, the esteemed criminal defense attorney who kept a young Keith Elam focused during his days at Morehouse College.

Davis, a Morehouse man himself, told the story of Dr. Benjamin Mays, the former president of the all-male, historically black college in Atlanta. According to Davis, Mays once talked about the “air of expectancy,” where Morehouse men were expected to do well, and upon graduation to do exceptionally well and that he expected nothing less.

By all accounts, that message was not lost on a young Elam. In fact, success was already deeply rooted in his DNA. It just took a little time — and patience.

But spitting rhymes?

Even now, Judge Elam can only shake his head. His youngest son was the rebellious one, unable to flourish in a world of vigorous academic study and intellectual discipline.

“I would hesitate to tell people what he was doing, because I didn’t feel that good about it myself,” Elam once told the Boston Globe. “I used to say, ‘He’s in music,’ but I would never specify rap. When he said that this is what he wanted to do, I was very unhappy, to be totally honest. Why would he want to waste his time doing this rap thing? I just couldn’t see it. I have to admit that I was wrong. I made an improper judgment at that time. But I’ve come a long way.”

Judge Elam did the best he could. He and his wife tried. They sent Keith to the prestigious Noble & Greenough School but that didn’t work as planned. “Keith wasn’t like his older brother who was an ideal student, class president and graduated with honors,” Elam said. “Keith wanted to be his own person.”

Keith’s older brother, Harry Elam Jr. went on to Harvard and became the Olive H. Palmer Professor in the Humanities at Stanford University. A recognized authority on black theater, Elam is now Vice Provost at Stanford.

But the next stop for Keith at the time was as a Metco student at Cohasset High School. Quite naturally, the Elams received telephone calls from school officials every now and then informing them that Keith wasn’t in school. His mother knew where he was hanging out and would go to those spots, pick him up and drive him to Cohasset.

He graduated on time, as he did at Morehouse. But the last straw with his family came when he boldly pronounced that he wanted to attend a two-year fashion school in New York City.

Judge Elam was not happy but helped finance the education anyway. When Keith returned home after the first year, explaining that he no longer was interested in fashion, Judge Elam had heard enough, informing his baby boy that he would now be on his own.

It was probably the best thing that ever happened.

“You have to go for yours,” Keith would later advise young rappers. “Nobody is going to do it for you. My father used to say that all the time, but I never really learned that until I was out on my own. That’s one thing a lot of young brothers have to learn for themselves.”

Keith learned that lesson first hand. With his neighborhood partner, Big Shug, Elam initially performed in suburban talent shows and Boston clubs such as Chez Vous in Dorchester and the now-defunct Lanes Lounge in Mattapan.

But Guru’s quest for recognition came to a halt in Boston. He decided to move to Brooklyn, the heart of hip hop. The road was tough, but a break occurred when Guru teamed up with Christopher Martin, known as DJ Premier. They signed to Wild Pitch Records and, in 1986, debuted their first album, “No More Mr. Nice Guy.”

Later the pair dropped hits such as “Code of the Streets,” “Mass Appeal” and “DWYCK.” In all, they released six albums between 1989 and 2003 that were both critical and commercial successes.

“Step in the Arena” (1991) is considered a high-water mark in the genre, according to one reviewer, “as it combined Guru’s brash rhymes — filled with braggadocio, humor and social critiques — and the inventive, often jazz-laced tracks provided by Premier.”

Gang Starr’s fifth album, “Moment of Truth,” hit number one on the Billboard R&B/hip hop album charts. Along with artists such as Public Enemy, De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest, Guru helped make the late 1980s and the 1990s what Rolling Stone magazine called “Rap’s golden age.”

“Rap is way more than violent noise, which is what some people think,” Guru told an interviewer. “I’m here to demonstrate that. The philosophy of taking control of your life comes out in my lyrics because it’s what happened to me. There’s purposely no cursing, because it’s relating to and having respect for other generations.”

That respect came in part from Roxbury in general and his godfather in particular.

As a solo artist, Guru released a quartet of critically acclaimed “Jazzmatazz” albums from 1993 to 2007. Those albums, each with a different musical slant and subtitle, found the artist working with a wide variety of artists including jazz greats Branford Marsalis, Lonnie Liston Smith, Roy Ayers, Bob James, Donald Byrd, Herbie Hancock; R&B stars Erykah Badu and Macy Gray, and fellow hip hop artists Common and the Roots.

The jazz connection was learned at an early age. His uncle George Johnson, the one-time headmaster of English High School, played the greats for his nephew.

“Every time I would go to my godfather’s, he would make me sit down in his living room and listen to John Coltrane, Charlie Parker and Sonny Rollins,” Guru said. “When the Jazzmatazz concept first began, nobody had really thought to put hip hop and live jazz together. Now, all these years later, I stake my claim as the father of this genre.”

One critic who flew in from India to attend Sunday’s tribute agrees. Carolyn Martin wrote for Soul Underground, a British hip hop magazine, and was quite impressed with Guru when she first met him in the early 1990s.

“It was his degree of inner silence,” she said. “He was almost too serious, too reserve for the world of ultra-macho MCs. He was introspective, an intellectual and extremely disciplined. He was larger than self-promotion because his music wasn’t about himself.”

Guru had that rare ability to transform his music into an art form that even the reluctant ultimately embraced. Two such fans were his Dorchester neighbors. Still reluctant to call him Guru — we knew him as Keithy — Dr. Nancy Norman, the chief medical officer at the Boston Public Health Commission and her sister Patricia Green, the marketing director at Student Funding Group LLC, a New York-based college financial aid company, said they both were not fans of rap and its disrespectful language and depiction of women.

“It took me awhile, Green said. “I never liked the genre — until Jazzmatazz, the fusion of jazz and hip hop. I thought to myself, ‘Now, this makes sense.’ And I think that is Keithy’s legacy. He had the ability to merge different genres.”

And drop knowledge. Ask his nephew Justin Ruff, an aspiring actor now living in Los Angeles. Ruff said he looked up to his uncle in part because he had few older men in his life. “He taught me various things about life; he instilled wisdom,” Ruff said. “He always told me ‘Never put the two before the one.’ What that meant was never put anyone else before yourself. I carry that with me to this day.”

By all accounts, Guru was a man of honor. As Big Shug tells the story, he and Guru had several falling outs during their life-long friendship but remained tight.

“The one thing we said to each other was that if one of us makes it, and the other doesn’t, the one that made it will help the other,” Shug said. “And that’s what Guru did. He reached back for me and helped me out. He was a man of his word.”

From the AJC.com:

Morehouse College is among the country’s most grueling colleges according to a listing released Thursday by the Huffington Post.

The all-male school is the only HBCU listed among the likes of MIT, Johns Hopkins, University of Chicago, Caltech and the U.S. Naval Academy. The school’s commitment to upholding standards of excellence as well as its reputation for having notoriously difficult pre-med courses is what landed the school on the list, the Huffington Post writes.

The listing does not appear to be an official ranking and the schools are not listed in any particular order. But Robert Franklin, Morehouse’s President, considers the recognition an honor, and said it is a terrific affirmation to the college’s academic vigor as well as the school’s success of developing Renaissance men in a Hip-Hop culture.

“We have really high expectations and strive to provide an ivy-league education with black college resources,” he said. “We work to inspire our students to work hard and do their personal best. And it seems its paying off.”

But to get a better understanding of just how grueling the curriculum at the school is, we went right to the source – the students.

Jeron Rowland, a rising senior Psychology major agrees with the Huffington Post. He references the faculty’s commitment to “over prepare” students for the “next level.”

“I believe Morehouse is one of the most challenging colleges in the nation, especially for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) majors,” he said. “I am currently in a research program, John H. Hopps Research Scholar Program that requires 10 hours a week of research along with my 18 credit hours.”

The complete list can be seen here.

From the AJC.com:

Four Morehouse College students who were kidnapped and carjacked Sunday night used a cell phone to call 911 from the trunk of the car where they were being held, only to be placed on hold by the 911 operator.

The students managed to call the Morehouse College police department, where a dispatcher alerted Atlanta police to their whereabouts, the students said at a news conference at Morehouse on Monday morning.

Two suspects, a 17-year-old and a juvenile, were arrested when police arrived at a West End bank where the suspects were attempting to use the victims’ ATM cards.

Two of the students were in the trunk and two others were in the back seat of the carjacked Buick Lacrosse. The victims in the trunk were able to use an emergency latch to open the trunk enough to see where they were. Police responded to a Wachovia branch on Lee Street, where they arrested the two suspects. A third suspect was able to escape.

The four students were approached by gunmen around 6 p.m. on Peeples Street in southwest Atlanta, according to Atlanta police spokesman Otis Redmond.

The suspects demanded money and other belongings from the victims before forcing two of them into the trunk of the car.

No injuries were reported in the incident.

From Allhiphop.com:

Legendary Gangstarr artist Guru has succumbed to cancer after a lengthy bout with the disease.

The artist, born Keith Elam, died on Monday April 19. He was 43 years old.

Solar, Guru’s production partner, expressed sadness over the loss.

“The world has lost one of the best MCs and Hip-Hop icons of all-time — my loyal best friend, partner, and brother, Guru,” Solar said in a statement. “Guru has been battling cancer for well over a year and has lost his battle! This is a matter that Guru wanted private until he could beat it, but tragically, this did not happen. The cancer took him. Now the world has lost a great man and a true genius.”

Guru, a Boston native and Morehouse College graduate, rose to fame in the 80’s and 90’s as one half of the Brooklyn, NY-based Gangstarr, the iconic rap group with DJ Premier.

The group released six highly regarded albums in their tenure until 2003 when they broke up. After his successful run with Premier, Guru founded 7 Grand Records with producer Solar.

Solar went on to tend to the rapper as he fell ill, seemingly controlling the flow of information and access to Guru. Many of his family members complained that they were denied their right to see him.

Solar also said that Guru wrote a letter to fans and sent it out through a press agency.

“For the fans that reached out with love and support, I can’t tell you how much that meant to Guru and myself. Guru prepared this letter (read below) while he was in the hospital for the fans,” the producer continued. “I hope now that Guru has moved on to a better place.”

In the letter, seen below, the rapper explains his illness, expresses gratitude to supporters and offers some parting words for DJ Premier.

I, Guru, am writing this letter to my fans, friends and loved ones around the world. I have had a long battle with cancer and have succumbed to the disease. I have suffered with this illness for over a year. I have exhausted all medical options.

I have a non-profit organization called Each One Counts dedicated to carrying on my charitable work on behalf of abused and disadvantaged children from around the world and also to educate and research a cure for this terrible disease that took my life. I write this with tears in my eyes, not of sorrow but of joy for what a wonderful life I have enjoyed and how many great people I have had the pleasure of meeting.

My loyal best friend, partner and brother, Solar, has been at my side through it all and has been made my health proxy by myself on all matters relating to myself. He has been with me by my side on my many hospital stays, operations, doctors visits and stayed with me at my home and cared for me when I could not care for myself. Solar and his family is my family and I love them dearly and I expect my family, friends, and fans to respect that, regardless to anybody’s feelings on the matter. It is my wish that counts. This being said I am survived by the love of my life, my sun KC, who I trust will be looked after by Solar and his family as their own. Any awards or tributes should be accepted, organized approved by Solar on behalf myself and my son until he is of age to except on his own.

I do not wish my ex-DJ to have anything to do with my name likeness, events tributes etc. connected in anyway to my situation including any use of my name or circumstance for any reason and I have instructed my lawyers to enforce this. I had nothing to do with him in life for over 7 years and want nothing to do with him in death. Solar has my life story and is well informed on my family situation, as well as the real reason for separating from my ex-DJ. As the sole founder of GangStarr, I am very proud of what GangStarr has meant to the music world and fans. I equally am proud of my Jazzmatazz series and as the father of Hip-Hop/Jazz. I am most proud of my leadership and pioneering efforts on Jazzmatazz 4 for reinvigorating the Hip-Hop/Jazz genre in a time when music quality has reached an all time low. Solar and I have toured in places that I have never been before with GangStarr or Jazzmatatazz and we gained a reputation for being the best on the planet at Hip-Hop/Jazz, as well as the biggest and most influential Hip-Hop/Jazz record with Jazzmatazz 4 of the decade to now. The work I have done with Solar represents a legacy far beyond its time. And we as a team were not afraid to push the envelope. To me this is what true artists do! As men of honor we stood tall in the face of small mindedness, greed, and ignorance. As we fought for music and integrity at the cost of not earning millions and for this I will always be happy and proud, and would like to thank the million fans who have seen us perform over the years from all over the world. The work I have done with Solar represents a legacy far beyond its time and is my most creative and experimental to date. I hope that our music will receive the attention it deserves as it is some of the best work I have done and represents some of the best years of my life.

Hot 107.9 and the entire Radio One Atlanta family sends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Keith Elam.

Although Guru is gone, his music will live on in the hearts of fans forever:

According to MTV News, rapper Guru of the legendary Brooklyn-based hip-hop group Gang Starr suffered a cardiac episode over the weekend and is currently in a coma.

Details are still unknown about the rapper’s condition and when the incident occurred.

Miss Info reported that Guru, a graduate of Morehouse College, is currently in a New York-area hospital where he’s expected to undergo surgery.

Gang Starr’s DJ Premier was scheduled to appear on Sirius XM’s Hip-Hop Nation satellite radio station late Sunday night to speak about Guru’s condition. However, Premier never called in. According to the producer’s blog, the sensitivity of the situation prevented him from speaking publicly. In the same post, Guru was described as “fighting for his life.”

Composed of Guru (born Keith Elam in Massachusetts) and Premier (born Christopher Martin in Texas), Gang Starr teamed together to help define the New York underground rap sound in the early ’90s. Premier’s production palette featured sampled jazz records and scratched vocals on the choruses, complemented Guru’s uncompromising rhymes. Although the pair would work separately as often as they did together — Guru’s Jazzmatazz series of albums and Premier’s work with Nas, Jay-Z, and underground act Group Home — Gang Starr continued to release critically acclaimed material throughout the late ’90s and early 2000s.

Their 1998 album Moment of Truth was among their most critically lauded collections and Gang Starr’s biggest selling project to date. Gang Starr’s last group project, The Ownerz, was released in 2003.

Guru spoke with MTV News at the time, noting the pair’s penchant for working on outside projects, but ultimately continuing to work together.

“You went on your little vacation, but you come back home with a bunch of skills and other things to add to the table,” he said. “When we do Gang Starr it always gets more and more intense.”

Guru recently re-released his 2005 solo debut as a digital download and re-christened it Version 7.0: The Street Scriptures.

Here’s a few of Gang Starr’s most memorable tracks:

13 Year old Stephen Stafford II is not your typical teenager. He is currently a college student pursuing a triple-major at Morehouse College. Although Stafford is a college student, you can still find him doing your typical teenager activities, sitting in front of the TV or playing video games. He is becoming a sensation at the college and his teachers and classmates are excited about having him in their classes.

“I’ve never taught a student as young as Stephen, and it’s been amazing,” said computer science professor Sonya Dennis. “He’s motivating other students to do better and makes them want to step up their game.”

“When I saw how much knowledge Stephen has at such a young age, I wondered what I had been doing with my life,” laughed third-year student, Eric Crawford. A psychology major and computer science minor, Crawford wanted to step up his game so much that he got Stephen to tutor him. “Even though I’m older, Stephen is like a mentor and my elder in computer science,” said Crawford.

The driver of the bus that crashed last month carrying Morehouse College band students apparently died of natural causes Tuesday after a wreck in southwest Atlanta.

Ralph Marshall, 63, of Jonesboro died following a collision near Sylvan Road, according to the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office.

An autopsy performed Wednesday morning “shows no evidence of significant injury from the vehicle incident and death appears to be due to natural causes,” Chief Medical Examiner Randy Hanzlick said in a statement. “Toxicology studies will be performed but results will not be available for at least several weeks.”

Jesse McClardy, the former owner of the bus and father of Superior Transportation Group owner Steven McClardy, said he was told Marshall died of a heart attack.

Atlanta police were unavailable to confirm the circumstances of the incident, but Marshall was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he died Tuesday afternoon.

State officials have opened an investigation into the company that owned the bus that rolled over Saturday with Morehouse College band students on board.

The Georgia Public Service Commission late Monday began a formal investigation into Superior Transportation Group, PSC spokesman Bill Edge said. The PSC in February had issued a “cease and desist” order against the company, saying it was not properly licensed.

“If you are presently conducting operations you are doing so illegally,” stated the letter, written by a member of the PSC’s transportation unit. The PSC issues permits to buses, passenger vans and limousines in Georgia.

One of three buses carrying 42 students overturned on I-75 southbound en route to a football game in Albany.

The bus company, Superior Transportation Group, is one of a dozen bus carriers the PSC lists as being unauthorized to operate within the state.

The PSC listed a 2008 complaint against the company and said Superior was among the list of 12 charter companies the commission believes are operating in Georgia “without the lawful authority necessary to legally conduct intrastate transportation of passengers and their luggage.”

To get an operating permit from the PSC, buses and other carriers have to provide proof of insurance and submit a background check and a safety inspection, as well as pay a $50 fee, Edge at the PSC said. The safety inspection is done by public safety officers and not by the PSC, he said.

Police are allowed to stop buses and other carriers to ask for their PSC certification. If the driver can’t show it, the police can impound the vehicle, Edge said.

The PSC issued the “cease and desist” order to Superior after a woman representing a school wanted to hire the company but could not find it listed on the PSC’s Web site. The PSC said Superior didn’t have a permit, Edge said.

“That’s how we found out they were operating illegally,” he said.

While law enforcement officials have the authority to impound buses and other carriers that don’t have permits from the PSC, state regulators don’t have the legal authority to shut down a company after a “cease and desist” order is issued, Edge said.

The agency posts a list of illegal carriers on its Web site and sends the information to law enforcement, he said.

“There’s not a whole lot we can do beyond taking administrative action,” Edge said. “We told him, ‘Stop operating, you’re in violation of the law.’”

The PSC’s investigation will include gathering evidence and a hearing.

Morehouse officials on Monday said the school never contracted with the company to transport the band.

“Morehouse College hired Adventure Bus Charter and Tours Inc., based in Sumiton, Ala.,” spokeswoman Toni O’Neal Mosley said in a statement released Monday. “We are conducting an internal investigation to determine how Superior Transportation Group Inc. in Atlanta was involved.”

Mosley said the school’s internal investigation is looking into just what company or organization was operating the bus during the accident.

The bus went off the road in Henry County around 10 a.m., just south of I-675, authorities said. About a dozen students were injured, and one remained hospitalized Monday night at Grady Memorial Hospital, school officials said.

Atlanta University Center students united to become a family and rejoiced yesterday that all the people that were involved in Saturday morning’s accident survived. Only one student was seriously hurt and remains at Grady Memorial Hospital. Forty-two members of the “House of Funk” Morehouse Marching Band were traveling to Albany State for a football game, when a car reportedly cut in front of the bus they were riding in. Witnesses say, that unexpected move caused the bus to hydroplane, swerve and flip twice Saturday around 10 AM. Dozens of people were hurt. None of the injuries were considered life-threatening. Sources say, the one student that’s still at Grady did suffer some sort of fracture, but that has not been confirmed.

At a gathering at the Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel, students prayed for those who were hurt, and rejoiced for others who were not hurt. Attendees said they were compelled to celebrate because the potentially deadly accident did not lead to any loss of lives.
