Many celebrities came out to support and perform during the telethon that aired on all major networks last night. The telethon, put together by George Clooney,wanted to raise millions for the earthquake survivors in Haiti. George Clooney pledged $1 million of his own money, as did Leonardo DiCaprio and other stars.

Beyonce Perforrms “Halo” for Haiti Telethon

Beyonce and Madonna have joined Friday’s “Hope for Haiti Now” celebrity telethon for the earthquake-ravaged Caribbean nation, and actors George Clooney and Leonardo DiCaprio will each donate $1 million to the cause, their representatives said on Thursday.

Beyonce will perform in London and Madonna will take the stage in New York in the evening benefit show being broadcast on all four leading U.S. networks, dozens of cable channels and internationally on Internet websites.

DiCaprio is giving $1 million to the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund, which was started by former Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.

Clooney, the “Up in the Air” star who organized the event, will officially make his $1 million donation during the telecast, his spokesman said.

Stars who have already contributed to help Haiti include “The Blind Side” actress Sandra Bullock, who gave $1 million, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, who donated $1 million, and model Gisele Bundchen, who gave $1.5 million.

Pop star Shakira said on Thursday her Barefoot Foundation would build a school in Haiti. She will also perform in the telethon.

Clooney, who will take part in the telethon from Los Angeles, told “Entertainment Tonight” he had been up for “three days straight trying to put it together.”

“It’s first getting networks together, getting phone lines, phone banks, charitable organizations together and finding the way to get the money to them. It’s a long process of making deals and trying to get things done,” he said.

Other notables taking part include Bill Clinton, U2 frontman Bono, singer Bruce Springsteen, rapper Jay-Z and actors Denzel Washington, Julia Roberts, Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep.

MTV, the show’s co-producer, has said “Hope for Haiti Now: A Global Benefit for Earthquake Relief” will be the most widely distributed telethon in history.

After word spread that Kanye had been banned from tonight’s telethon benefiting Haiti on MTV, reps from the network are denying it.

MTV Networks representatives issued the following brief statement:

“We reached out to Kanye (through his people) about performing on the telethon. We did not hear back definitively but we DID ask him to be a part of it.”

Friday’s big telethon benefiting relief efforts in Haiti is sure to be a star-studded affair. However, there’s one big star that has not been invited.

Organizers for the telethon, which is scheduled to air January 22nd on all MTV Networks channels, have said that Kanye West has not been invited to participate.

“After what he said on the Katrina telethon and the way he behaved at the MTV Video Music Awards, everyone agrees it’s just best that he does not participate,” a producing partner told Rob Shuter of Naughty But Nice. “Kayne has to make everything about himself. He will do anything to steal the spotlight and, well, this night it’s just not about him.”

As we previously reported, a bevy of top-selling artists will perform a cross-continent televised fundraiser for “Hope For Haiti Now” tomorrow. Wyclef Jean, Jennifer Hudson, Mary J. Blige, and Shakira will perform from New York; Los Angeles hosts Alicia Keys, Christina Aguilera, John Legend, Justin Timberlake, Stevie Wonder, and Taylor Swift; and Coldplay joins Bono, Jay-Z and Rihanna in London.

But there’s one star who won’t be there. And that’s Kanye West.

The two-hour program will be simulcast on all major networks, HBO and music-themed cable channels and online at video sites including YouTube and Hulu. It will benefit on-the-ground-in-Haiti charities like Oxfam, Partners in Health, the Red Cross and Wyclef’s Yele Haiti organization.
