According to a recently-published article on Breakit, Spotify users may have to wait “several months” to hear new music from Kanye West and other artists due to their commitment to Jay Z’s new streaming service, Tidal.

“The practise is called windowing and is used in the movie industry were people who don’t want to pay for a ticket at the box office are forced to wait for the DVD (or Netflix release or whatever),” the Breakit article says.

According to the publication, Spotify replied with the following statement:

“We want all the world’s music on our service, but there has been sporadic limiting on Spotify since it was created. We know from experience that these things happen, they come and go, and we continue to grow exponentially by delivering a great product for our users and the artists they love.”

With regards to the man at the helm, Jay Z’s debut studio album Reasonable Doubt has already been pulled from Spotify and is no longer available to its users. Tidal is now offering the critically acclaimed 1996 effort in high fidelity for $19.99 a month.

We’ll have to wait and see but it definitely looks as though this could be a bumpy road for Spotify.
