The NYPD finally has some good news.

The NY Daily News reports that the New York Police Department is on its way to having a record low year for police gunfire incidents. Kevin Ward, the NYPD’s chief of staff, said the rate is the lowest it’s been in years. The stats detailed in a 73-page report indicate 50 incidents this year, compared to 79 in 2014 and 81 in 2013.

The Daily News continues:

Despite the two fewer incidents, more cops fired off their weapons and more bullets were fired in 2014 compared to 2013, according to statistics.

The report reveals that 282 shots were fired by police last year — 34 more rounds than the year before. And 104 cops pulled their triggers in 2014, six more than the year before.

Cops fired at suspects during 35 incidents in 2014 — five more than in 2013. The remaining discharge incidents involved unintentional shootings, fending off attacking animals, suicides and attempted suicides, the report notes.

Last year, Officers Rafael Ramos and Officers Wenjian were fatally shot, while two other officers were wounded.

Hopefully, this news will lead to even better stats for 2016.
