Grammy-nominated singer Elle Varner’s diverse background has made her the strong multicultural woman she is today.

The talent behind the smash hit “Only Wanna Give It to You,” Elle grew up with a Cape Verdean Mother, and a half-Swedish half-Black father, both of whom are singers, and she realized how hard it was to fit in. Elle found school to be the toughest, as she felt wasn’t Black enough to befriend the Black kids and wasn’t white enough to hang out with the white kids.

Despite this, her parents made sure she knew about the many cultures that she represented. As she got older she learned a lot from her grandfather  who helped her embrace African-American side, as he was the president of NAACP chapter in Maine. Aside from teaching a lot of other people vital information about their background as well as others, her grandfather helped her expand her mind to be accepting and loving of everyone.

Elle learned how to take what other people misunderstood about her and develop her own sense of self, which reflects in the title of her 2012 debut album, Perfectly Imperfect. It’s no surprise that the album reached number 4 on the Billboard Hot 200.
