As Summertime Chi gets underway, with all its wonderful festivals, beaches, and endless amounts of things to do, people in the city also know that the season can mean a higher rate of crime, and especially gang activity in some of Chicago’s neighborhoods. Chance The Rapper, who grew up in the Chicago neighborhood of Chatham and experienced what it’s like to grow up in some of the least safe neighborhoods in the city is using his popularity in his local city to bring about initiatives to end violence in the city.

For the second year in a row, the rapper is getting together to #SaveChicago by  creating and listing events that young people can take part in, including leadership, sports, spoken word, community programs, etc. The idea is for young people to be visible and get outside in their communities in a way that is positive and empowering. The #SaveChicago campaign has drawn positive attention from other local stars who also started participating in the initiative by either showing support or tweeting about it.

Some of Chicago’s neighborhoods have become notorious for the violence, often involving young people. We hope that this becomes a regular initiative for the Windy city to empower those who need it most!
