A French bar owner is currently on trial for the death of a patron who took 56 shots in one sitting, the UK Telegraph reports.

A court will rule on Monday if the bar owner who allowed the 57-year-old man to consume the copious amount of alcohol will face jail time for his actions. Renaud was at the “Le Starter” in Clermont-Ferrand last October with family and friends, when he decided to press his luck and beat the bar’s record of 55 shots. After taking his first 14, Renaud was reportedly encouraged by the bar’s landlord and others to beat the record. The UK Telegraph reports:

According to his daughter, the landlord of the bar whispered “only 12 to go” at one point, apparently encouraging him to keep going. “The owner served the father of my client when he was not in a fit state to understand what he was doing,” the daughter’s lawyer Antoine Portal told BFM TV. “It is not known whether he would still be alive if he had not drunk the last 12 shots, but by downing those last shots, he was left with no chance,” he said.

In the span of a minute, Renaud took 30 shots. After being taken home by friends, Renaud suffered a heart attack and was taken the hospital, where he died the next day.

The defendant’s lawyer denies culpability:

“When you are the owner of a bar and an order has been placed, you cannot always check who is drinking what. We cannot stand behind every customer,” the bar owner’s lawyer told RMC radio. “The customers are responsible for themselves as are their families and friends.”

The bar owner is currently facing charges of “manslaughter through willful neglect.”
