Nine Dead After Church Shooting In Charleston

One of the most bittersweet stories to arise from the Charleston AME church shooting was that of a five-year-old girl who played dead to avoid being shot by gunman Dylann Roof on Wednesday during a late night bible study session.

It has now been discovered that it was her grandmother, Felecia Sanders, who played dead and shielded the girl with her body, ABC News reports. Sanders’ quick thinking saved them both from joining the nine church members who Roof killed in cold blood. Cynthia Taylor, the niece of shooting victim Susie Jackson, revealed to the Associated Press that Sanders told her what happened that horrific night.

Suspect Dylann Roof was caught in North Carolina and has been taken back to Charleston to await trial. He has been charged with nine counts of murder and may face the death penalty.

The nation is still struggling to recover from this horrible hate crime.
