An explosion blamed on terrorist organization Boko Haram rocked Yola, capital of Nigeria’s Adamawa state, on Tuesday, killing an estimated 32 people and injuring 80 others, the Associated Press reports.
According to Deputy Superintendent Othman Abubakar, the police spokesperson for Adamawa state, most of the victims were vendors and passersby.
From the AP:
Tuesday night’s blast breaks a three-week hiatus in bombings after a string of suicide attacks culminated in twin explosions in mosques in two northeastern cities that killed 42 people and wounded more than 100 on Oct. 23.
Some 20,000 people have been killed in the 6-year-old Islamic uprising that has spread to neighboring countries.
According to the 2015 Global Terrorism Index, Boko Haram has overtaken ISIL (or Daesh) to become the deadliest terrorist group in the world. Deaths attributed to Boko Haram increased by 317 percent in 2014 to 6,644. ISIL was responsible for a marginally fewer 6,073 deaths.
While Boko Haram has been terrorizing Nigeria for years, many in the United States first became aware of the organization when they kidnapped over 200 girls from Chibok, Nigeria. This atrocity led to the global #BringBackOurGirls campaign, with even First Lady Michelle Obama throwing her support behind the Twitter hashtag.
Though it was initially reported that there was little chance of the girls being found alive, a few made daring escapes soon after their capture. The majority of the girls were later returned, many of them “visibly pregnant” by their Boko Haram captors.
Nigeria’s military has aggressively sought to dissolve Boko Haram. They have reportedly foiled several, recent suicide bombers recently, as well as destroyed Boko Haram camps in air raids and ground attacks. The organization, however, continues to incite terror around the world.
As news of Boko Haram’s latest terrorist attack began to circulate on Twitter, the muted concern — in comparison to the collective grief over the Daesh/ISIL terrorist attack on Paris on November 13th, and to a lesser extent, their recent attack on Beirut — did not go unnoticed.
