Three officers were killed and three others wounded in a shooting in Baton Rouge on Sunday morning. Officials believe that the shootings were carried out by numerous gunman with one being shot dead at the scene.

Police received a call of a “suspicious person walking down Airline Highway with an assault rifle,” a source told CNN. When police arrived around 10am Eastern Time, the shooting began, killing three officers and injuring three others who are in currently in critical condition.

The names of the officers have yet to be released to the media.

“This is an unspeakable and unjustified attack on all of us at a time when we need unity and healing,” Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards said.

Kip Holdenthe mayor-president of East Baton Rouge Parish, stressed that “everything is moving fast” and the scene is still active. “They are investigating. Right now we are trying to get our arms around everything,” he said.

Baton Rouge, along with the rest of the nation, has had a rough few weeks with the killing of Alton Sterling by the hands of the police and his emotional funeral on Friday. And while the recent Dallas shootings that killed 5 police officers were prompted by a lone sniper who was disgruntled about the police brutality epidemic in our country, it’s important to not jump to conclusions about these recent police deaths in Baton Rouge.

Officials have stressed that the motive is unknown, CNN pointed out.

We send our deepest condolences to the families.

This is a developing story. We will provide updates as they become available.
