NAIL TALK: The Difference Between Gel Manicures And SNS Nails

Depending on your level of glam, getting our nails done can easily take all day. While many of us are fans of eye-catching designs like crystals, coffin-shaped nails to chrome nails and everything in between, we can all agree that the health of our nails comes first. While there are some people who prefer to keep their nails natural, there are various techniques when done correctly that won’t compromise the health of your nails like gel manicures and SNS (signature nail systems) aka the powder dip manicure.

Gel Manicures

Gel manicures are a pretty simple technique that gives us a gorgeous set of nails at a fraction of the normal time. The system consists of shaping your cuticles and nails for the polish to lay evenly. Once your nail technician buffs and shapes the nail to perfection, they will apply a clear base coat, two to three coats of color and finish with a top coat. Once completed, your hands are placed under a LED or UV light to lock in the color and prevent chipping. Lasting about two weeks, this quick method is a favorite for many nail lovers.

SNS Nails

This technique is based on dipping. Manicurists start the process by shaping and filing the nails then cleansing the nails with primer. One coat of Resin (adhesive) is brushed on the nail plate. Each finger is dipped in the color powder individually for two coats and resin is added again. Then the manicurist applies the activator that is brushed on two to three times. Finally, a glossy top coat completes the nail set.

While each technique sounds like a great option, it’s best to select a technique that aligns with our lifestyle. For example, if you don’t mind taking a trip to the nail salon every two weeks, gel manicures would be perfect. However, gel manicures can become problematic and cause your nails to thin out with excessive use. When using this method, it is recommended to take breaks to ensure the health of your nails.
