Judging from his encounters with police over the years, it’s safe to say Ryan Leslie doesn’t have a great relationship with the boys in blue. The singer/songwriter/producer was recently hit with a lawsuit by a police officer. The cop is suing Ryan Leslie because the police officer left a voicemail on Leslie’s ex-girlfriend’s phone and Leslie used it in his song “Joan of Arc” without permission.

According to reports, back in 2011, Ryan Leslie’s ex-girlfriend supermodel Nicole Trunfio called the police alleging Ryan Leslie wouldn’t stop harassing her. Trunfio claimed Leslie wouldn’t stop calling or showing up unannounced at her home. Detective Luis Mortimer was put in charge of following up on the case. So he left a voicemail on Leslie’s phone asking him or his lawyer to return the call. However, Leslie put that voicemail at the end of his song “Joan of Arc” and Mortimer says it’s ruined his career.

Mortimer says he didn’t come forward earlier because he just learned of the song a few months ago. Mortimer’s attorney, Monica Kipiniak said, “The song has caused him embarrassment and has damaged his credibility as a detective.” Kipiniak also cites lyrics from “Joan of Arc” as evidence. In the song, Ryan Leslie raps, “I wake up to detec’ messages in my e-mail,’and ‘since when a birthday gift is harassment/a rose gold bracelet nothing subliminal/You called your lawyer up said my actions were criminal. Girls play the victim so well — Joan of Arc.”

Detective Mortimer and his attorney are claiming the unauthorized use of the voicemail is a violation of Detective Mortimer’s civil rights and is an exploitation. He’s suing for unspecified damages.

What do you think? Should the cop be awarded money for having an unauthorized recording of him used in a song?
