What do the NAACP Image Awards mean to Black Hollywood? Everything.

All too often, Black directors and thespians are left out of mainstream media’s agenda. Where award shows like the Oscars fall short, the NAACP Image Awards highlight and celebrate the accomplishments of Blacks.

#TeamBeautiful caught up with Taraji P. Henson, Ava DuVernay, Kerry Washington, Sharon Leal, Larenz Tate, Mara Brock Akil and the cast of “black-ish” backstage at the Image Awards where we chatted about the importance of the Image Awards.

“It just feels good to know you got a shot. You actually got a shot to thank yo mama,” Taraji P. Henson, recipient of the “Entertainer Of The Year” award, told us.

“The Image Awards represents inclusion,” Ava DuVernay also said in the press room. “What we’re all saying is, once you let us through the door we’re going to break it through and show you also who we are. We are American,” Mara Brock Akil added, noting the success of Lee Daniels’ Fox show “Empire.”
