Since Odd Future has seemed to go their separate ways creatively, many of its prominent front runners went quiet for a while, particularly the group’s nominal leader, Tyler “The Creator” Okonma. He came out of hiding in a big way this past Wednesday (April 8) by revealing a whole assortment of goodies for his loyal OF fan base.
First, Tyler’s got a new album coming on April 13 called Cherry Bomb, his first project since 2013’s Wolf and his fourth album overall. “DEATHCAMP” and “F*****G YOUNG/PERFECT,” the album’s first two singles, dropped along with the album, which were quickly followed by a typically colorful and zany music video from Tyler.
YouTube wasn’t the first place this video premiered, though. Tyler also unleashed a new app called Golf Media on the world which will house exclusive video content, photos, and presumably Odd Future-related premieres like merchandise and tickets. The service is free for two months and comes with a physical magazine in the mail, but then turns into a $5/month subscription.
Random album drops from the sky have characterized 2015 as a stellar year for Hip-Hop so far, especially albums that aren’t shackled to audience expectation and cater more toward the artist’s particular tastes and emotional palette (Kendrick Lamar‘s To Pimp A Butterfly, Action Bronson‘s Mr. Wonderful, OF’s own Earl Sweatshirt‘s I Don’t Like Shit, I Don’t Go Outside), and it appears that Tyler’s album will be no exception. No one’s scared to be themselves anymore, and everybody’s winning because of it.
