Drake’s OVO Fest in Toronto ended in mayhem last night, after two people were shot and killed during an after party hosted by the rapper. The shooting occurred at Muzik, a nightclub near Molson Amphitheatre. More than three people were wounded and a man and woman were killed. The names of the victims have not been released. Last year, a similar incident occurred at the same event, injuring one person. Even though Drake hosted the party, there’s no word on whether he was in the club when the shooting occurred. Read more.
Issa Rae Productions, FINC Entertainment Group, & Dormtainment Team Up For “Killing Lazarus”
Awkward Black Girl creator Issa Rae’s production company has joined forces with FINC Entertainment Group and Dormtainment to work on a new project called Killing Lazarus. The drama-themed film delves into the final three days of a friendship between Thurgood Jacobs and Lazarus James. “In this 120 minute feature, we watch as a childhood friendship shaped by necessity, turns to an adult one of comfort. Local drug dealer Thurgood Jacobs (aka T), and his closest friend Lazarus James (aka L) have been in the business for years. Our story find the two just days before T’s 30th birthday. With the wear and tear of the business weighing on his conscience, the Police bearing down on his team and a purported rat in their ranks, T wants out,” reads the synopsis. “A friendship finally revealed for what it is and a momentary mental fracture creates a perfect storm for what happens next.” Read more.
2 Shot after J. Cole Concert in New Jersey
Drake wasn’t the only rapper who had a shooting incident occur after his performance this week. According to reports, two people were shot outside of J. Cole and Big Sean’s concert in Holmdel, NJ at the PNC Bank Arts Center. A witness said an argument ensued in the parking lot before shots rang out: “Everyone started sprinting and stampeding.” The two victims are in critical condition. J. Cole and Big Sean are slated to perform at Madison Square Garden in New York City this evening. Read more.
New Documentary Explores South Africa Through the Lens of Millennials
A new documentary will capture South Africa’s social and political realms through the millennial lens. Generation Soweto will debunk myths about what it’s like to live in South Africa. Producer Nisa Ahmad was inspired to create the film after taking a trip to Africa earlier this year. “These young kids, kids that in America are still living with their parents, are running companies. One of our cast members is a blogger and she learned how to code by using YouTube tutorials. It just inspired me that in the face of adversity they are not letting anything get in the way of them and their dreams,” said Ahmad. “I hope this documentary builds a bridge between millennials around the world and show how similar millennials are and how connected they are through the Internet.” She recently launched an Indiegogo campaign to raise funds for the film.
