In the newest episode of Finding Your Roots, which premiered on Tuesday, Sean “Puff Daddy” Combs discovered some pretty shocking information.
The PBS show’s main goal is to help stars uncover their family’s history that may have not been readily available to them in the past.
For Diddy, however, the information he learned was quite unexpected.
Alongside host Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Diddy found out that his third great-grandfather was born in Maryland — and was a free man.
Henry said of Diddy’s newfound familial history, “Make no mistake about it, man, this is not typical of the black experience.” Adding, “for 90 percent of the African-American people who sat where you’ve sat when I’ve done their family tree, no free ancestors.”
The knowledge overwhelmed Diddy and, rightfully so, conflicted the hip hop mogul. He responded, “[the information] makes me feel kinda conflicted, that my family was free and there were so many other families that weren’t.”
Finding Your Roots appears on PBS every Tuesday at 8 PM EST.
