The retail giant will begin rolling out NFC-based Tap to Pay on August 24, 2026, starting at select Walmart and Sam’s Club locations. The company expects the technology to be available at all U.S. Walmart stores and Sam’s Club locations by the end of the year.
The change means shoppers will be able to pay using Apple Pay on an iPhone or Apple Watch, along with Google Pay, Samsung Wallet, contactless credit and debit cards and other compatible payment methods. Walmart has long been one of the biggest Apple Pay holdouts in the country, instead encouraging customers to use Walmart Pay, which requires shoppers to scan a QR code through the Walmart app. Walmart Pay isn’t going anywhere and will remain an option alongside the new contactless payment methods.
The August 24 launch is only the beginning, so shoppers shouldn’t expect every Walmart to accept Apple Pay immediately. The company plans to gradually upgrade stores throughout the remainder of 2026, while Walmart and Sam’s Club fuel stations are expected to receive Tap to Pay support in 2027. Once the rollout is complete, Walmart customers will finally be able to tap their phones, watches or contactless cards at checkout without having to pull out a physical card or open Walmart Pay.
