A chastened President Barack Obama signaled a willingness to compromise with Republicans on tax cuts and energy policy Wednesday, one day after his party lost control of the House and suffered deep Senate losses in midterm elections. Obama ruefully called the Republican victories “a shellacking.”

Nathan Deal led a historic Republican sweep of Georgia on Tuesday, soundly defeating Democrat Roy Barnes to become Georgia’s next governor. Republicans seized historic gains to take control of the House on Tuesday, as voters upset with the economy, President Barack Obama and government dealt a strong blow to Democrats all over the country.

With the Republican Party blocking every positive action that President Obama tries to take, plus the emergence of the ultra-conservative Tea Party (which many, including the NAACP, have accused of having racists in its movement), the midterm elections in November are extremely important. Locally, Georgia has a chance to elect its first Democratic governor in years in Roy Barnes, who is running against Republican Nathan Deal.
