The movie was shot in entirely in South Africa, around Cape Town, Johannesburg, and in Mandela’s home town The East Cape in 2012.  The script is based on Mandela’s autobiography, published in 1996.  Anant Singh, the films producer said: “”TWC is the best North American distributor for Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom and I am delighted to continue our association of over 20 years with Harvey, which began with Sarafina and Cry, The Beloved Country.”

Harvey Weinstein, a Hollywood powerhouse, is known for having his films dominate during awards season.  Two 2012 Weinstein releases “Django Unchained” and “Silver Linings Playbook”  are up for over six Academy Award nominations combined this Sunday.  With that kind of clout, it’s totally possible to see Idris Elba’s name thrown in the mix, come nomination time next year.

Elba, who currently wrapped up the third season of  “LUTHER”, will star in the upcoming summer blockbuster “Pacific Rim” and will reprise his role as Norse god Heimdall in “Thor: The Dark World” which opens November 8th.
