Reggae star Buju Banton has pleaded not guilty to a drug charge in Florida following his arrest last December.

The reggae musician was arrested at his Tamarac, Florida home by an undercover police officer. He was charged with conspiring to buy over five kilograms of cocaine.

Banton did not seek bail, reports BBC News – as he would have been held by immigration officials if he had.

David Oscar Markus, Banton’s lawyer, claimed his client was set up by “some evil people trying to take advantage of his trusting and honest character”.

Due to not being on bail Banton is likely to miss the Grammy Awards ceremony on January 31. The event takes place in Los Angeles, with Banton‘s album “Rasta Got Soul” nominated for the Best Reggae Album award.
