Ava DuVernay is onto the next challenge in her illustrious career, and Marvel Studios is hoping that it can wrangle her talent.

Full disclosure: I’m still a little salty about the Oscar snub for her film Selma. However, no one can deny her cinematic talents for telling a great story, and Marvel has taken note. According to Shadow and Act, Ava may be in talks to direct an upcoming movie for the studio, which has made a killing with its various franchises, like the Avengers.

At first, there were whispers that she would direct Black Panther, starring Chadwick Boseman, which would have only given us reason to snag a ticket even faster than we already were. There’s no word, however, that the film may be handed over to Rick Famuyiwa. This doesn’t knock Ava completely out of her prospective spot in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as she could be shifted to another project.

According to Rope of Silicon, Marvel might want her to direct its film for Captain Marvel, which is slated for a November 2018 release. Word is the studio wants to add a little extra girl power to the movie behind the scenes, and Ava could be perfect for that.

Whether she’s directing Black Panther or focusing on Marvel’s first movie centered around a female hero, I’m happy that Ava will get a chance to bring her vision to the MCU! This would make her the first Black female director to work with Marvel.

Now if we could just get a Black female superhero onscreen out of Marvel, that would be awesome. I’m going to keep putting that out into the universe until it happens.
