In honor of the tragic events that took place earlier this year in July in Prairie View, Texas, when an interaction with a police officer on University Boulevard led to the death of Sandra Bland, the stretch of road was named Sandra Bland Parkway.

According to The Root, The City Council voted on Tuesday to keep the name ‘Sandra Bland Parkway’ after facing some opposition from locals, who disagreed with the name. The naming was initially given in August to ease tensions after the incident led to divisions in the community.
Before the officer interaction, Bland was on her way to Prairie View A&M, her alma mater, and where she had recently relocated, to take a job at the university. Supporters of the naming, included students from the current university believed that re-naming the street was necessary to honor her, as well as remind police officers of their duty to serve and protect.
