Remember when MTV put out the list of the hottest MCs and Kanye West ranted and raved about being in the #7 spot? Yeah, that was one of my favorite Yeezy rants too because he started going in on MTV’s Sway about that time he gifted him with his first TV and he wanted Sway to remember that:

“I gave [MTV News reporter] Sway his first TV. He came over to my crib in Newark, NJ. I was living in Newark doing beats for Jay and Beans and all them and I was getting a new TV and I gave Sway his first TV. And really I didn’t really wanna even like call to talk about the #7 list, I just wanna tell everybody that I gave Sway his first TV. And he need to remember that.”

I got the chance to ask Sway about that TV that Kanye gave him and his response was this amazing story. Spoiler alert: Kanye West did not give Sway his first TV.

Check out Sway’s side of the Kanye West TV story:

“When Kanye first came to New York, him and I used to get together a lot. He would come to MTV and play his music for all of us. It was before he signed his deal. And I was working with a female vocalist and I saw some of the work Kanye had done with Beans and some other artists and I thought he was a tremendously talented guy. This was about in 2000.

I had a budget and I asked him if he’d be interested in producing an R&B vocalist and he said, “Sure,” so I took him on a train to Philadelphia to a studio and meet up with a friend of mine, Commissioner Gordon, who put together Lauryn Hill’sMiseducation of Lauryn Hill.” I brought him into the studio with Commissioner Gordon, who is also an engineer and they talked about the proper way to mix live instrumentation over loops and drum beats. Kanye would stay in Philly with us.

As he started to evolve, he got a new apartment and in that apartment, he had an old TV and he would keep it in the sink because he was embarrassed by how small it was. I asked him, “Hey man, you throwing that away?” He said, “Yeah,” and I said, “No you ain’t. Carry it down to my car.” We carried it down to my car and I told him, “I’m saving this TV to remind you were you came from.” 12 years later, he brought the TV up again.”
