Graduations are meant to be special moments between students and their families, but one family is now facing charges for cheering on their relatives during a high school graduation in Mississippi.
Two family members of Senatobia High School graduate Lanarcia Walker and two others were issued warrants after cheering on Walker and another student at the school’s commencement ceremony last week, News Channel 3 reports. The school’s superintendent Jay Foster filed ‘disturbing the peace’ charges after warning families to wait until all names were called to cheer. Foster claims the Walker family was disruptive; he also says the rule was enforced in an effort to make sure family members hear the names of all graduates.

Allegedly, he also informed the crowd that people who ignored the request would be escorted out of the building. Four family members made noise during the ceremony, and were promptly asked to leave.
Walker’s family tell another story, claiming their cheers were not disruptive and didn’t affect the next graduate called.
“He said ‘you did it baby’, waived his towel and went out the door,” Lanarcia’s mother Linda Walker explained abut her son’s actions. “When she went across the stage I just called her name out. ‘Lakaydra’. Just like that,” Ursula Miller said she shouted about her niece. “A week or two later, I was served with some papers.”
Warrants issued to the relatives have a possible $500 bond, an amount the family says they cannot afford.
“It’s crazy,” Lanarcia’s brother, Henry Walker said. “The fact that I might have to bond out of jail, pay court costs, or a $500 fine for expressing my love, it’s ridiculous man. It’s ridiculous.”
The family also believes the lingering charges put a damper on the proud feeling they had watching their relatives receive a high school diploma.
