In partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, the King Center will highlight obesity and lack of physical activity and its negative effects on the human body. Inspire. The National 9/11 Flag is on a journey across America through the 10th Year Anniversary of 9/11. The goal of The National 9/11 Flag Tour is to display this historic flag at leading venues nationwide, to empower local service heroes with the privilege of stitching the flag back to its original 13-stripe format, and to inspire 300 million Americans with the flag’s visual history to deepen our sense of citizenship and national pride. The National 9/11 Flag will become a part of the permanent collection of the National September 11 Memorial Museum being built at the World Trade Center. SERVICE SUMMIT FREEDOM RALLY HOSTED BY HANDS ON ATLANTA Monday, January 17, 2011 – 7:30am – until – FREE Open to the Public Hands On Atlanta youth and family volunteers take a day on, not a day off every King Holiday during the Martin Luther King, Jr. Service Summit. The day begins with the Freedom Rally, a civic education forum, where participants learn from veteran and contemporary civil rights activists. The Hands on Atlanta day of service immediately follows the rally, where volunteers get involved in dozens of service projects at sites that have significance to Atlanta’s civil rights movement. KING HOLIDAY MARCH AND RALLY Monday, January 17, 2011 Auburn Avenue at Peachtree and Baker Street – 1:30 P.M. FREE Open to the Public An annual march to promote civic duty and non-violent strategies to unify communities to support common humanitarian causes. The march is held on Auburn Avenue from Peachtree Street to Jackson Street. The Rally is held on Auburn Avenue in the King National park Area. CENTER FOR SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITIES—SUSTAINING FAMILIES AND COMMUNITIES THROUGH ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP Monday, January 17, 2011 King Center Plaza and Truly Living Well Urban Garden Center – 9:00 A.M. – 4:00 P.M. FREE Open to the Public Join the urban gardening community service project to help create an urban garden fruit orchard to promote sustainable communities. These day-long activities are in direct alignment with Mayor Kasim Reed’s 2010 Sustainability Plan, to ensure that the City of Atlanta becomes one of the top ten sustainable cities in the country. The project involves: planting nearly 100 fruit trees (apple, pear, cherry, peach etc) planting 200 vegetable seedlings of all sorts ( cabbage, greens, turnips, peas etc) collecting hundreds of pounds of recyclable materials. Hosted by The Center for Sustainable Communities in collaboration with Southern Company/Georgia Power, Atlanta Urban League, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), City of Atlanta Water Shed Development—Water Efficiency Division, Sustainable Atlanta, HTS Enterprises and the Truly Living Well –Center for Natural Urban Agriculture.
